Warrant Canary
A regularly updated, verifiable statement on the status of government orders and data requests.
What is a Warrant Canary?
A warrant canary is a regularly published statement asserting that an organization has not received certain types of legal orders. If the statement is removed, altered, or not updated on schedule, it may indicate that such an order has been received and the organization is legally prohibited from disclosing it.
The concept relies on the legal principle that while a government can compel silence, it cannot compel false speech. We can be ordered not to tell you we received a subpoena, but we cannot be ordered to affirmatively state that we have not.
